Václavské náměstí (Wenceslas Square, named for Saint Wenceslas, the subject of "Good King Wenceslas") is in the "New Town" area of Prague.

New Town was formed in 1348 and is supposedly too modern to be interesting, but I beg to disagree. Václavské náměstí itself is 750 meters by 60 meters, with a broad pedestrian mall down the length. The National Museum marks one end of it. The nightime photos were taken on each of two nights when I visited the square after work (between 10 PM and midnight). The daytime photos were taken around 7:30 AM one morning before work.

Václavské náměstí from the National Museum This view is a look down the mall from the St. Wenceslas statue that stands in front of the National Museum. The bat-like sculpture is apparently a memorial to Jewish victims. I found it fascinating.

National Museum A look in the opposite direction from the last photo, showing the St. Wenceslas status and the National Museum.

Václavské náměstí Early morning on the mall, looking toward the National Museum.

Václavské náměstí This is the end of the mall opposite the National Museum. It widens out a bit into a wide pedestrian area. There's a strange sculpture made out of plumbing supplies, just visible to the right. You can see some commodes or sinks just above the dark van.

Václavské náměstí at night At night the buildings lining the mall are lit up, and there is lots more activity.

Václavské náměstí at night The weather was wonderful the two nights I wandered around the mall, as can be seen from people's dress. The three-wheeled vehicle in this photo is a "Velotrixi". This one appears to be for hire as a taxi, but you can also rent them for your own use.

Just beyond the Velotrixi are a few tables where I stood and ate supper the first night I visited the mall.

Sausage and pivo 80 Krowns I bought a large sausage on a bun and a half-liter of Pisner Urquell here for 80 Czech Krowns (about $3.60), and ate them at tables at the far end (not visible here, except for the edge of the umbrella).

That's where encountered a rather clumsy pick-pocket.

National Museum This is a rather poor phot of the National Museum and the St. Wenceslas statue at night.

Jewish memorial and National Museum The National Museum at night, through the legs of the sculpture that so fascinated me.

Jewish memorial A really bad photo that I had to save because it's the best one of this scultpure. It does manage to convey a bit of the sculpture's grotesque, uneasy nature.

Memorial to victims of Communism I barely noticed this memorial because it is so subtle, sunk down inside some bushes. It commemorates Jan Palach and Jan Zajíc, who committed self-immolation in the square, in January and February, 1969, protesting the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovkia.

Shopping alley There are lots of what might best be described as shopping alleys running perpendicular to the square. This one is particularly upscale.

Street scene The square at night. And no, that's not the woman that solicited me.

Pilsner Truck An early-morning delivery of beer. Concrete, they deliver by the wheelbarrow full. Beer, by tanker truck.
